Taxi bosses nabbed in take-down operation
Key taxi industry figures were arrested in Cape Town, Matatiele, and Nelspruit during a take-down operation. Six men and a woman, aged 35 to 65, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court. They are accused of acting together between 2021 and 2023 to torment, intimidate, and extort major long-distance bus operators. The seven include prominent taxi bosses Bonke Makalala and Simphiwe Matshala. eNCA’s Ayesha Ismail reports that they allegedly extorted millions of rands from bus companies in exchange for protection.
