As international competition surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) intensifies, what strategy should Japan adopt? In May, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) compiled a proposal on the government's AI policy, "AI White Paper 2.0." The proposal advocates for the establishment of "AI sovereignty," neither a closed-off path of entirely domestically producing AI nor a passive reliance on giant overseas IT companies. We spoke with House of Representatives member Akihisa Shiozaki, Secretary-General of the LDP's AI and Web3 Subcommittee, who was in charge of compiling the proposal, about his thoughts behind it and his outlook for the future.
