Selenskiye Isady Market Selenskiye Isady is a famous market in Astrakhan, one of the city's calling cards and a popular tourist attraction. It has been in business for over 150 years and is well known not only to locals. The word "isady," although it sounds similar to gardens, has nothing to do with them. In ancient Rus', it was used to refer to a landing place or pier. The name "Selenskiye Isady" comes from the name of a village beyond the Kutum River, founded in the early 18th century. The villagers' main occupation was catching, processing, and selling fish, which is why the largest fish market was established here. The fishing industry in Astrakhan has always flourished thanks to its prime location on the banks of the Volga, and today every self-respecting tourist makes a point of buying fish here. For this, the most logical place to go is Selenskiye Isady – no other place offers such a selection. The market primarily sells processed fish: dried, smoked, or caviar. The most popular item is vobla, or Caspian roach, while fresh fish is a rarity here. Vendors offer sampling of almost all the products, and the vast selection can easily turn a tasting into a full meal. "Selenskiye Isady" is more of a tourist attraction: there are more visitors than locals, and tastings, photo sessions, and even tours are commonplace. You can also stock up on gifts for friends—vobla, smoked salmon, or a jar of caviar will easily withstand even the long journey home. Prices here are also tourist-oriented: you wouldn't call them low. Smoked pike perch or catfish cost 600-800 rubles per kg, smoked salmon is even more expensive, and silver carp is cheaper, at 250-350 rubles. Sturgeon and sterlet prices reach up to 2,500 rubles per kg. But vobla is quite affordable—50-100 rubles each. However, this is a market, so bargaining is possible and necessary!
