Bending the Curve: How global cooperation can help end the plastic crisis

Global negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty have stalled — but the plastic crisis is accelerating. In this special session, we share insights from our latest report, Bending the Curve: How global cooperation to reduce plastic production can help end the plastic crisis. Developed by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) with Eunomia Research & Consulting Ltd, the research explores how countries can move forward to cut plastic production despite obstruction from petrostate interests and other vested actors. If current trends continue, global plastic production is projected to reach around 766 million tonnes by 2040 — equivalent to producing more than 100 smartphones per person each year. The need for decisive action is urgent. In this webinar, uur panel explores what happens when groups of countries act together to reduce plastic production and consumption — and what happens when they do not. The discussion highlights alternative policy pathways, the role of coalitions in overcoming political deadlock and the implications for the future of a Global Plastics Treaty. Speakers: Christina Dixon, Ocean Campaign Leader, EIA (Moderator) Tim Grabiel, Senior Lawyer, EIA Dr Sivendra Michael, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Fiji Bethanie Carney Almroth, Professor of Ecotoxicology, University of Gothenburg Debbra Cisneros, Principal INC Negotiator, Panama Read the full report: https://eia-international.org/report/...
