The dual-time watch simultaneously kept local and home time, perfect for the booming aviation industry. Today, collectors of all lifestyles and professions adore the iconic Rolex GMT for its unique aesthetic and convenient timekeeping capabilities. The first model was released under ref. 6542, now affectionately referred to as the "Pussy Galore" after its association with the James Bond character by the same name who was seen wearing it in the 1964 flick Goldfinger. Reference 1675 hails from the second generation of GMT Masters, which came to market in 1959 and continued production for several decades before it was finally discontinued in 1980 to make way for its successor, ref. 16750. One more edition of the original GMT Master would come to market in 1988, ref. 16700. The GMT Master was ultimately phased out in favor of the GMT Master II, equipped with a newly independent 24-hour hand. GMT MASTER 1675 During reference 1675's impressive production run, several iterations of the watch hit the market. The model is available with either an all-black or two-tone red and blue “Pepsi bezel.” Additionally, the watch will have either pointed or square crown guards, depending on the year the watch was produced. Every Rolex 1675 features an older-style acrylic crystal and Tritium lume. Although Rolex did produce variations of the watch in two-tone and all-gold under different reference numbers, ref. 1675 specifically is an all-steel Rolex. MOVEMENT From 1959 until the mid-1960s, the collection was powered by the caliber 1565 perpetual movement with a 42-hour power reserve and frequency of 18,000 bph. After that, the caliber 1575 powered the ref. 1675 boasting a higher frequency of 19,600 bph, a longer 48-hour power reserve, and, after the 1970s, a convenient hacking seconds function. DIAL VARIATIONS The dial has either a small or large 24-hour hand depending on the year produced. Reference 1675 is also the first time we’ve seen the specific wording "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the GMT Master dial. Additionally, early editions featured a glossy gilt dial followed by matte dial variations around the mid-1960s. There are several variations of each dial type. The glossy dials either have a chapter ring or no chapter ring. From there, there are a few different types of glossy dials, with the chapter ring is commonly distinguished as types 0 - 3. Those without the chapter ring are often categorized into types A, B, and C. The matte dials are categorized into several different "Marks" labeled Mark 0 - 6. THE ROLEX RADIAL DIAL That brings us to the GMT Master Radial dial, which falls into the matte dial Mark 3 category. While most vintage dials vary in the typeface and order of the text, Radial dials are distinguished by the size and placement of the hour markers. On these dials, the hour markers are smaller and closer to the center of the dial. Because of this design, Radial dials are also often referred to as "mini dials." They’re also distinguished by tall, narrow SCOC font and a very distinctive GMT logo font. Radial dials are highly collectible because they are so distinctive and recognizable.
