Authorities in the Chicago suburb of Lockport, Ill., locked down a high school campus after mysterio

(11 May 2009) HEADLINE: School on lockdown after suspicious bottle found CAPTION: Authorities in the Chicago suburb of Lockport, Ill., locked down a high school campus after mysterious fumes from a bottle left in a hallway sent 13 students to a hospital. (May 11) [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] MONDAY MORNING STARTED WITH A CHEMICAL SCARE INSIDE AN ILLINOIS HIGH SCHOOL AT LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL'S CENTAL CAMPUS 9 STUDENTS AND ONE TEACHER WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER THEIR EYES AND SKIN WERE EXPOSED TO A CHEMICAL INSIDE PLASTIC BOTTLE THAT WAS IN A HALLWAY. Diamond Gordon/15 years old "Some kid dropped it from the 3rd floor and it made a big booming sound like algebra books falling on the ground." Chassidy Pantojaos/15 years old "It was a works bomb that a kid through in the middle of the hallway. There was chemicals in the bomb and there was a reaction." Diamond Gordon/15 years old "It just splattered everywhere it just burst open and it was fuming like the smoke was going up in the air." LOCKPORT SCHOOL OFFICIALS SAY IT APPEARS THE BOTTLE WAS USED TO RELEASE BLACK SMOKE AND POSSIBLE CHEMICALS WHILE STUDENTS WERE ARRIVING. SCHOOL OFFICIALS WENT INTO LOCKDOWN MODE FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS AND THEN RELEASED ALL OF THE KIDS. Margaret Benes/18 years old "They had an announcement that said code yellow and then it was like ok. and then they went to code red and we were like, oh boy. It was like an hour went by and there was a class of like 20 or 25 students up there, it was just really scary." Kim Brehm/School Spokesperson "We did have one teacher that witnessed and all we are able to confirm is that there was some black smoke involved but we are not sure what it was. Right now we feel it may have been a toxic substance." CLASS AND ALL OTHER ACTIVITIES WERE CANCELLED AT THE ILLINOIS SCHOOL FOR THE DAY SO AUTHORITIES COULD DO A THOROUGH SEARCH OF THE SCHOOL AUTHORITIES SAY NO DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE SCHOOL PROPERTY.
