The couple had eloped to Chandigarh on April 5, 2007, and married at a Durga temple on April 7. Despite obtaining police protection, they were abandoned near Peepli village, where Babli's relatives — her brother Suresh, uncles Rajinder and Baru Ram, cousins Gurdev and Satish, and Khap leader Ganga Raj — kidnapped them using a Maruti 800 later found at a mechanic's scrap shop with forensic evidence on the handle and rear seat. On March 29–30, 2010, the Karnal District Court convicted all accused of murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, and destruction of evidence — sentencing five to death and Khap leader Ganga Raj to life imprisonment, making it the first honour killing conviction carrying a death sentence in Indian legal history. Manoj's widowed mother Chanderpati and sister Seema fought the case despite witness intimidation, lawyer refusals across Karnal, and a physical attack on Seema inside the courthouse. The Punjab and Haryana High Court later commuted the death sentences and acquitted Ganga Raj — a ruling that Chanderpati vowed to challenge in the Supreme Court. The case was featured on Aamir Khan's Satyamev Jayate (June 3, 2012) and inspired the films Khap (2011) and Guddu Rangeela (2015).
