THE ART OF WELCOMING | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (June 28, 2026) with Sign Language Today is the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The gospel presents to us the costs and rewards of discipleship. The conditions that Jesus laid out sounds severe. Whoever loves his family more than him is not worthy of him; whoever does not take up his cross and follow him is not worthy of him; whoever finds his life will lose it, and the list goes on. But what is Jesus laying out here? Perhaps is teaching them that when one commits to an endeavor, one is expected to fulfill it totally. If we choose to follow him, everything else will have to be seen in a new light. You’ll be poor in the eyes of the world. Then, in the second half of the narrative, Jesus teaches us how we might respond to his disciples. In welcoming them, we welcome Jesus, too. Jesus is present in his disciples who have become vulnerable for His sake. In other words, brothers and sisters, today’s gospel invites us to commitment. If one chooses the path of discipleship, they must do so wholeheartedly in poverty.
