Parallel Compression in Logic Pro X Tutorial
More exclusive content: http://www.musicwithak.com In today's video, we discover how to do parallel compression, or "New York compression" in Logic Pro X. This is a very common production technique used in heaps of hits. Logic Pro X's compressor plugin has been upgraded in the new Logic 10.1 update, and there is a new 'mix' knob which lets you mix what is being output from the compressor, the compressed signal and the dry, uncompressed signal. This achieves the parallel compression effect and sounds great, without needing to send the track through a bus to an aux track, add heavy compression to the aux track, and then mix this in with the original track. Having this knob makes it so much quicker and easier to see whether parallel compression will work on a track. Parallel compression was first used in about the 1970s, and it is particularly effective on drums and depending on the sound you're going for, you might be applying it to drums the majority of the time. It's a fantastic technique because it retains the original dynamics of the track while adding some serious weight and punch. It's most often used on drums, but it also works really well on acoustic guitars, basses, synth basses, and it's worth a shot trying on anything and using if it sounds good! It works great One thing you can do to enhance the effect, as I explain in the video, is to add an EQ to the aux track where the strong compression is taking place, and boost the highs and the lows. This really cements the foundation of the track in the bass and injects energy into the highs. Good luck with using both of the methods I show you in the video, and experiment as much as you can with how it works, try it on different instruments and play around with settings, don't be afraid to go extreme and see what happens! I hope you enjoyed the video, and feel free to ask any questions you have in the comments and I'd be more than happy to answer them quickly!
