The fallen petals may suggest the transience of beauty, while the small dog sleeping on the bed represents loyalty and marital fidelity. The white sheet, the pearl earrings, the domestic interior and the two handmaids preparing clothes all contribute to the symbolic meaning of the painting. The work seems to be an invitation to sensuality, but within the intimacy of the home and the bond of marriage. Commissioned by Guidobaldo della Rovere, the painting is often interpreted as a model created for his young wife, Giulia Varano, to celebrate the joys and duties of married life. The “Venus of Urbino” later arrived in Florence with Vittoria della Rovere, who married Ferdinando II de’ Medici. Today it is one of the most admired masterpieces of the Uffizi Gallery.
