A scandal has rocked a Russian circus institution: the animal rights group Vita released footage of trainers beating a monkey and a kangaroo during rehearsals at the Fontanka Circus in St. Petersburg. Although the date of filming of these images has not been specified, numerous celebrities, such as filmmaker Alexander Sokurov, sent a letter to the new director, mime Slava Polunin, in which they asked him to stop performing with animals.
