Final Fantasy XVI is an action-adventure role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix, released on June 22, 2023, for PlayStation 5. It is the sixteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series. A Windows port was released on September 17, 2024, and an Xbox Series X/S port on June 8, 2025. Gameplay: Final Fantasy XVI is an action RPG where the player can freely control the main character, Clive Rosfeld, and a growing party of AI-controlled characters. Recurring elements of the Final Fantasy franchise, such as Chocobos and certain monsters, appear in the game. After a story-driven and more linear prologue, Clive can travel through different areas of Valisthea, including dungeons, villages, and more open areas, accessible via a fast travel system. Travel within these open areas is done on foot or by Chocobo. Clive's base is a hideout serving as a central hub, allowing players to speak with NPCs, track Clive's relationships with other characters, visit item and weapon shops, and accept side quests, ranging from transporting items to hunting monsters. Information about locations, characters, and vocabulary encountered throughout the adventure is stored in a database called Active Time Lore, accessible at any time. Combat takes place in the same area the player is exploring, switching to combat mode once an enemy initiates an encounter. Clive is the only playable character; the other party members are AI-controlled, each with their own abilities. A regular companion is the dog Torgal, who can respond to Clive's commands to perform certain attacks or heal. In combat, Clive can perform physical attacks, dodges, and elemental attacks using Primals, the game's version of Summons. Clive can switch between two elements during combat. Each major enemy has a Destabilization Gauge, which the player must deplete to stun the monster and temporarily inflict more damage. At certain points in the story, Clive faces Primals with specific mechanics. After defeating them, Clive gains powers and abilities linked to them. The player can choose between two difficulty modes: a "Story" mode, which provides accessories to simplify combat and strengthen characters, and a Normal mode. Once the game is completed, new options are unlocked, such as a New Game+ mode that allows players to carry over their character's stats and equipment to a new playthrough, and a "Final Fantasy" mode that increases the difficulty and changes some enemy placements. Story Mode / Action Mode In Story Mode, you can more easily trigger Primal abilities, automatically avoid certain enemy attacks, and thus appreciate the dynamics of combat while enjoying the story.
