Elementary School at Kirchplatz in Wattens Officially Opened (Video & Photos: Reinhard Rovara © 2026) 20 Million Euro Education Project Sets New Standards for Modern Learning WATTENS (rr) With a moving ceremony, musical performances by the children, and numerous distinguished guests, the new elementary school at Kirchplatz was officially opened on June 26, 2026. After approximately two years of construction, the students now have access to one of the most modern school buildings in Tyrol. Around 20 million euros were invested in this forward-looking educational project. However, the focus of the celebration was not on the figures, but on the children who will fill the new school building with life. This school makes a difference Mayor Lukas Schmied welcomed the numerous guests from politics, education, business, neighboring communities, and representatives of the construction companies. In his opening address, he emphasized the significance of the new school far beyond Wattens. “For me, learning means realizing that what we do makes a positive difference. That’s exactly what our elementary school on Kirchplatz stands for,” said Schmied. He reminded everyone that the building was constructed over a two-year period and that the investment will benefit future generations. He particularly emphasized the support of the State of Tyrol and the excellent cooperation of all those involved. Children Say Thank You A particularly moving part of the program was the students’ expression of gratitude. In personal words, they acknowledged the architects, planners, mayor, construction companies, tradespeople, and everyone involved in the construction. The children described their joy at the bright classrooms, the modern gymnasium, the comfortable learning areas, and the warm atmosphere of the wooden building. Letters of thanks were presented to representatives of the companies and project managers. High Praise for Architects and Project Team Special thanks went to the architects Martin and Ruth, who had overseen the project from the very beginning. Teachers and children alike praised their dedication and ideas, which resulted in a modern school building that combines learning, community, and well-being. Harald, who coordinated the construction work and was present on the site daily for months, was also honored for his dedication and solution-oriented approach. Politicians wish for joy in learning Among the guests of honor were Provincial Councillor Eva Pawlata and Member of Parliament Florian Riedl. Eva Pawlata emphasized that school is far more than just lessons: "Besides math, German, or English, the most important thing is the interaction between people. Here, children learn friendship, solidarity, and mutual respect." Florian Riedl wished the children that school would remain a place where learning is fun and self-confidence grows. Music and enthusiasm The students' musical performances generated great enthusiasm. With their specially rehearsed song about the new schoolyard, they expressed their joy at the new school building. The numerous visitors repeatedly gave them long rounds of applause. A house for future generations With the opening of the elementary school at Kirchplatz, Wattens not only gains a modern school building, but also a place of encounter and education for the entire region. Bright learning spaces, sustainable timber construction, modern facilities, and spacious common areas create ideal conditions for contemporary learning. The celebration concluded with numerous conversations, commemorative photos, and anticipation for the open house. For the children, the new school building marks the beginning of a new chapter – one that will be characterized by community, curiosity, and the joy of learning for many years to come.
