Because in nearly twenty years as an accountant, it's the single most common question I'm asked, and "just gift the house" is very often the most expensive mistake a UK homeowner can make. In this video I explain, in plain English, exactly why gifting your home usually backfires — and what to do instead, in the order you should actually do it. You'll find out why giving the house away while still living in it doesn't remove it from your estate at all (the "gift with reservation of benefit" trap), what the seven-year rule really does and why it almost never rescues this plan, and how a council can treat you as if you still own a home you gave away years ago. Then I walk you up a simple five-rung ladder of what genuinely works — most people never need to climb past the bottom two. Two big changes make this urgent right now: the inheritance tax freeze has been extended to April 2031, and from April 2027 unused pensions get pulled into your estate for the first time.
