Lost Polish Tribe of Haiti

In this video, I talk about Polish soldiers who defected during the Haitian Revolution and became Haitian citizens, known today as the Polish Haitians. Napoleon sent 5,280 Poles in 1802 to crush Saint-Domingue's slave rebellion, but hundreds deserted and joined the revolutionaries. Their role in 1804 independence is known, but their recognition as Black citizens under the 1805 constitution, survival of the 1969 Duvalier massacre, and loss of language and culture are equally vital. Learn how the Black Madonna merged with Vodou, what life looks like in their village of Cazale today, and what traces of Polish heritage still survive in this deep dive into the Caribbean's most overlooked revolutionary story. -Buy me a coffee https://buymeacoffee.com/turkchap -Join turk chap Discord   / discord   -Music https://www.epidemicsound.com/music/t... https://www.epidemicsound.com/sound-e... https://www.epidemicsound.com/sound-e... https://www.epidemicsound.com/sound-e... https://www.epidemicsound.com/sound-e... https://www.epidemicsound.com/sound-e... https://www.epidemicsound.com/music/t... https://www.epidemicsound.com/music/t... https://www.epidemicsound.com/music/t... © Video created by turk chap
