The Forgotten Pacific : Building houses to withstand cyclones on Futuna Island
Vanuatu, a beautiful archipelago in the South Pacific, is a land of stunning natural landscapes, vibrant cultures, and diverse ecosystems. Despite its small size, Vanuatu is home to a resilient population that relies heavily on the ocean and the land for sustenance. We meet the communities on Futuna Island who are looking to the traditions of the past to help safeguard their future. Locals are returning to the 'saeklon haos', traditional houses made from vines, palm fronds and grasses that withstand the high winds, as well as carving paths into the sheer cliff face that connects their communities. The Forgotten Pacific travels to five Pacific islands to discover how communities are weaving indigenous knowledge into the modern-day fight to adapt, rebuild and save their islands from climate change.
