Episode 21: Stop Searching Fold3 the Wrong Way | The Formidable Genealogist Studio
Fold3 can be an incredible genealogy resource — but only if you know how to search it. In this episode of The Formidable Genealogist Studio, I’m walking through how to use Fold3 more intentionally so you can stop feeling overwhelmed by confusing search results and start finding the records you actually need. Many genealogists use Fold3 the same way they use Ancestry: by typing a name into the main search bar and hoping for the best. But Fold3 works best when you narrow your search first by category, conflict, place, or publication before searching for a person. In this episode, I show you: • Why I recommend skipping the main Fold3 search bar • How to browse by conflict, topic, place, and publication • How to search inside a specific record collection • Why “publications” on Fold3 are really record sets • How to find and use War of 1812 pension files • The difference between pension files and pension application indexes • How to browse surname sections inside a collection • How to download images as JPEGs or PDFs • Why PDFs can be helpful for keeping source information • How to search within U.S. military record categories • Why some Fold3 collections are browse-only and not name-searchable • How narrowing first can help you avoid frustrating results I also talk about the different ways to access Fold3, including Ancestry All Access, a standalone Fold3 subscription, or a free basic Fold3 account for free collections and promotional access periods. Fold3 is full of records that many genealogists overlook, including military records, pension files, photos, Native American records, Black history collections, Social Security Death Index records, and more. The key is learning to search smarter — not wider. If Fold3 has frustrated you in the past, this episode will help you approach it in a more organized and effective way.
