A $40 Bag of Salt Cools Rooms All Summer With No Electricity. MIT Proved It in 1948.

In 1948 a Hungarian-born chemist named Maria Telkes completed a house in Dover Massachusetts that heated itself through a New England winter with no furnace using bins of a forty dollar industrial salt called sodium sulfate decahydrate — Glauber's salt — warmed by solar collectors. The family living inside described the warmth as steady and even through nights well below freezing. The same material works in reverse. A salt that melts at ninety degrees Fahrenheit absorbs over one hundred British Thermal Units of heat per pound as it transitions from solid to liquid — silently pulling afternoon heat out of a room's air at precisely the temperature threshold where comfort becomes unbearable, storing it through the day, and releasing it through an open window at night when outdoor temperatures drop, resetting completely by morning with no compressor, no refrigerant, no electricity, and no moving parts. Sixteenth century Indian physicians dissolved saltpeter into water and produced frost on brass bowls in summer heat. Romans packed salt and snow to achieve temperatures below freezing two centuries before electricity existed. Persian engineers used evaporative brine cooling to store ice through one hundred and twenty degree desert summers. Different civilizations across five centuries arriving independently at the same answer. By the mid-2000s the German Fraunhofer Institute was documenting ten to thirty percent cooling load reductions in monitored buildings using phase change material ceiling panels derived from the same chemistry Telkes proved in 1948. The American construction permitting system has no line on any compliance form for a ceiling that absorbs heat chemically. Federal rebate programs pay thousands toward air conditioner replacements generating fifteen thousand dollars in lifetime service revenue. A forty dollar bag of Glauber's salt generates forty dollars once and then works silently for as long as the house stands. The arithmetic explains the silence. The Ancient Prepper exists to end it. ⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTE: Phase change thermal storage performs best in climates where outdoor nighttime temperatures drop below ninety degrees Fahrenheit to allow the salt to fully recharge — the Southwest, Mountain West, and most of Europe are ideal. In humid coastal climates where nights remain warm year round the salt cannot fully recharge and performance is significantly reduced. Poorly sealed Glauber's salt installations can experience layer separation that permanently reduces performance — proper encapsulation is essential for long term effectiveness. This technology reduces peak cooling loads and afternoon temperature spikes but does not replace air conditioning in extreme heat events. This video is for educational purposes only. SOURCES: 1.
