Family Meeting Topic: How to choose a good friend.

What makes someone a real friend? (This conversation was prompted by the Nolan Xavier Wells mystery) This week we sat down with our kids for one of the most important family meetings we've had yet. We talked about the difference between acquaintances, friends, close friends, and the people you can truly trust. As Black parents, we also talked about discernment how your friends' friends can affect your safety, why loyalty matters, and how to recognize when a relationship isn't as healthy as it seems. Using real-life stories, we challenged our children to think beyond popularity and ask deeper questions: What makes someone trustworthy? Who stands up for you when you're not in the room? When should you walk away from a friendship? How do you know someone has truly earned your trust? Our goal isn't to raise fearful children. Our goal is to raise wise children who know how to build healthy relationships without ignoring warning signs. If you're raising kids, we hope this conversation encourages you to start having these discussions around your own dinner table.
