He offered an official apology for the wounds of 1951, when approximately 12,500 former KNIL soldiers and their families were forcibly relocated to the Netherlands, neglected, and placed in inhumane conditions with no guarantee of survival. While this recognition felt far too late for many, the Dutch government's move marked a significant moment in validating the emotional pain and long-standing suffering endured by the survivors and their descendants during decades of exile. Interestingly, amidst this historical pain, a unique connection emerged, growing out of a love of football. People in Maluku, particularly Ambon, demonstrated fanatical support for the Dutch national team, the "Oranje," as a show of pride in the presence of talented players of Maluku descent on the international football stage.
