Hi guys, here we are with the club in the beautiful, wild Fuerteventura. One of the few places still virtually untouched, where nature and man blend together. How do you get there? How do you transport your fishing gear? What permits are needed? And in which areas can you fish? To get to the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura, you can obviously either fly or take a boat. Air is the fastest route, and you can bring your equipment with you, along with special sports gear. Unfortunately, we encountered problems with a well-known company on our return journey, as they wouldn't allow rods to be taken on board (obviously, as always, it depends on who's in control), but it happened, for example, with the MSA guys and other club members. In the Canary Islands, there are areas permitted for spearfishing and others prohibited, which is not the case for rod fishing. These areas are named after the island: Fuerteventura f1 f2 f3 f4 tenerife t1 t2 t3 t4 t5 etc. Gran Canaria g1 g2 g3 g4… etc. I've attached a map of Fuerteventura, for example. Regarding fishing, there are restrictions depending on the inland and outlying waters. These are the Canarian regulations, the outlandish regulations, and the Spanish regulations. For example, corvina cannot be caught in inland waters, but it can be caught in outlying waters. There are also protected fish species throughout Spain, such as the angelote, angel shark, and others… which can be consulted on the Canarian agriculture and fishing website. The fishing permit in Spain is valid for three years. There are three types of fishing permits. The freediving permit is second-class and is issued on the island; it cannot be obtained online. It requires a Spanish medical certificate on yellow paper; Italian or other national medical certificates are not valid. The average cost is €35 to €45, plus a €24.88 tax, which can be paid by post at any Spanish bank. Some offices issue it immediately, while others require a 15-day wait. With the new 2024 law, a federation membership is also required, but it is still very unclear. This membership is required for third-party liability insurance. Apparently, memberships from other countries are also valid, as long as you have international insurance. You must always have one with you for transportation and fishing. Even to buy a speargun in Spain, you need a fishing permit, and I assure you that any shop in Spain will ask for one. Fishing and transporting equipment without a permit is a major risk because, in addition to reporting the incident, all equipment is immediately confiscated, even if the permit is forgotten at home. Ultimately, there are many more restrictions than in Italy, but the beauty and abundance of fish in Fuerteventura trumps everything else.
