HIMALAYAN 450 vs KTM 390 ADVENTURE : Don't Buy an ADV Before Watching This
HIMALAYAN 450 vs KTM 390 ADVENTURE : Don't Buy an ADV Before Watching This We put the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 head-to-head with the new KTM 390 Adventure lineup to test real-world highway cruising speed, off-road suspension, low-end grunt, and long-distance touring comfort. 1. Engine Characteristics & Performance Himalayan 450 (Sherpa 450): Royal Enfield’s first liquid-cooled engine is a massive departure from their traditional long-stroke motors. It is a linear, torque-rich engine that starts waking up beautifully in the mid-range. It cruises effortlessly at higher speeds but retains a tractable, chugging nature that makes it feel unstoppable on steep, technical trails. KTM 390 Adventure: A high-revving, frantic masterclass in single-cylinder performance. The power is concentrated in the top end of the rev range. It begs to be ridden hard, delivering an aggressive, sporty surge of acceleration that rewards an active, enthusiastic rider but requires you to keep the revs up. 2. Suspension & Ride Quality Himalayan 450: Showa upside-down forks and a rear monoshock offer a masterclass in plushness. It absolutely glides over broken tarmac, potholes, and sharp rocks. The suspension feels endlessly forgiving, keeping the chassis incredibly stable and comfortable over long journeys. KTM 390 Adventure: Set up on the firmer, sportier side. While newer variants offer adjustable suspension to fine-tune the ride, the inherent character is taut. This translates to phenomenal, sharp handling on tarmac and twisties, but it transmits more of the road's harshness to the rider on rough trails. 3. Highway Performance & Wind Protection Himalayan 450: A phenomenal highway tourer. The bike feels heavy, planted, and unfazed by crosswinds or passing trucks. It comfortably maintains a 110–120 km/h cruise all day long. The stock windscreen offers decent torso protection, though taller riders might experience some helmet buffeting. KTM 390 Adventure: A pocket rocket on the highway. It handles high-speed overtaking with absolute urgency. However, because it is lighter, it can feel a bit more nervous in high crosswinds. The stock windscreen is relatively short and sporty, often requiring an aftermarket touring screen for serious long-distance wind protection. 4. Seat Height & Ergonomics Himalayan 450: Offers an adjustable seat height (825mm down to 805mm with the low seat option), making it highly accessible to a wider range of riders. The rider triangle is upright, relaxed, and feels incredibly natural when transitioning to a standing position on the footpegs. KTM 390 Adventure: Features a taller, uncompromising seat height (typically around 855mm). Combined with a relatively wide seat profile, it can be intimidating for shorter riders. The ergonomics are a blend of street-sport and ADV—excellent for control, but the handlebar position requires risers for comfortable, prolonged standing off-road. 6. Electronics & Rider Aids Himalayan 450: Focuses on functional utility. It features a gorgeous, circular TFT display with full Google Maps integration, ride-by-wire, switchable rear ABS for off-road sliding, and basic ride modes (Eco and Performance) that noticeably alter throttle response. KTM 390 Adventure: A tech powerhouse. It comes loaded with lean-sensitive cornering traction control, cornering ABS, off-road ABS modes, a quickshifter, and a comprehensive color TFT display. The electronics act as a sophisticated safety net, allowing you to push the bike's limits with immense confidence.
