Babel 1 Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. 2 As they journeyed eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4 They said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens. Let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." 5 Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. 6 Then the LORD said, "Behold, they are one people, and they have one language. They have begun to do this; from now on nothing that they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another." 8 So the LORD scattered them from there abroad upon the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because from there the LORD came He confused the language of the earth.
