Twitter @juangangel Luffa is a genus of seven species of flowering plants belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. The plants, and especially their fruits, are known as pastes, loofahs, or vegetable sponges. It is the only genus in the subtribe Luffinae. The genus name derives from the Arabic word "Luffa" (لوف). They are tropical and subtropical climbing plants. The fruit of at least two species, Luffa acutangula and Luffa aegyptiaca, is cultivated for harvesting and eaten as a vegetable. It is popular in Asia and Africa. Its popularity has been amplified since it began to be used to make exfoliating sponges, as they are of high quality and provide very good dermatological results.
