We Believed Portugal Was Still Affordable (38 Days + Costs)

It's about our first time in the Algarve Portugal, (Olhão, Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira), and the many cultural surprises along the way. As we explore Portugal, we’re not just checking off tourist spots — we’re diving into everyday life. Everyone talks about the Algarve, Portugal’s famous southern coastline, but most visitors head west. We decided to do something different and spent 38 days exploring the eastern Algarve, searching for beautiful beaches, authentic Portuguese culture, and a more affordable cost of living. What followed was a journey full of surprises. From arriving in Faro and navigating quiet fishing towns, to discovering local restaurants, riding Portugal’s regional trains, and crossing into Spain by ferry, every stop revealed a different side of life in the Algarve. We wandered through pine forests, explored massive sandy beaches with hardly anyone around, and stayed in charming apartments in Olhão, Vila Real de Santo António, and Tavira. Along the way, we experienced cultural misunderstandings, language barriers, unexpected travel challenges, and plenty of memorable meals in everyday locations. Some days felt like an adventure. Other days felt like everyday life. That’s exactly what we were looking for. As full-time travelers trying to live around the world on a realistic budget, we wanted to answer an important question: Can you actually live in Portugal’s Algarve region for around $3,000 per month? Between accommodation costs, transportation, groceries, restaurants, beaches, and daily life, we tracked every expense. By the end of our month-long stay, we discovered far more than just beautiful scenery. We found a side of Portugal that many travelers completely overlook. And one town stood out above all the rest. =============================== LINKS FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 🚆 Algarve Railway Line • The train line that connects much of the Algarve region from west to east. 🔗 https://www.cp.pt 🏨 Hotel Cidade de Olhão (Our Olhão Accommodation) • Boutique hotel in Olhão with a breakfast buffet included. 🔗 https://www.booking.com/Share-O6e90y 🏠 Vila Real de Santo António Airbnb (Our Favorite Stay) • Two-bedroom apartment with a full kitchen, laundry room, balcony, and easy access to beaches, grocery stores, trains, and Spain. 🔗 https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/97220166... 🏡 Conceição (Cabanas de Tavira Area) Airbnb • Spacious apartment with multiple balconies, a full kitchen, and a great location near Tavira, Cabanas, beaches, and the train station. 🔗 https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/84702299... 🎢 Aquashow Water Park • Portugal’s largest water park featuring slides, pools, roller coasters, and family attractions. 🔗 https://aquashowpark.com Background music by @SongCreationsByCraig Advertiser Disclosure: We use affiliate links.
