As a longtime fan of the franchise (over 20 years!), I’d rate the game a solid 7/10 in its current state. Let’s break down what went right, what went wrong, and what I would’ve loved to see. Priced at $60 with a limited map, Pharaoh's initial reception suffered from this timing and pricing, mirroring the backlash from Warhammer fans. The base game felt underwhelming at launch, not because of CA Sophia’s lack of passion, but because it seemed like the game was hampered by budget constraints. What Went Right: Fast forward two months, and Creative Assembly made things right. They reduced the price, refunded players who bought deluxe editions, and even gave out the High Tides DLC for free. This was a much-needed gesture to rebuild trust. The Dynasties update expanded the campaign map, added more factions, and improved the overall experience. The Campaign Mechanics I Enjoy: Visuals: The game is visually stunning, and I’ve grown to love the Bronze Age Collapse setting, with its rich lore and the mysterious Sea Peoples. Trade and Diplomacy: Pharaoh highlights the interconnectedness of ancient cultures, with the Pillars of Civilization mechanic making the world's collapse impact your own survival. Religion and Gods: Expanding to distant lands to unlock new gods and devoting generals for passive buffs adds layers of customization to how you play. Replayability: There’s incredible depth thanks to dynamic campaign mechanics, court intrigue, and the variety of paths provided by ancient legacies. Plus, the customization options at the start of each campaign are fantastic. Battle Mechanics: General Units: I love the return of general bodyguard units instead of the superhuman generals of Warhammer or Three Kingdoms. Lethality System: The Dynasties update introduced a one-shot lethality system that sped up battles, making them far more intense. Immersive Maps: Terrain and line of sight have never been more crucial. The Blood & Sand DLC adds even more immersion with incredible visuals. Modding Potential: Pharaoh is mod-friendly, opening the door for future fan-created content like new factions and unit reskins. What I Would’ve Loved to See: Defeat Traits for Faction Leaders: Especially now that faction leaders can die for good, it would’ve been thrilling to race to eliminate them and claim a special trait. Sea Peoples Invasions: The invasions were nerfed in the Dynasties update, and I miss the looming threat of being overwhelmed by top-tier enemy stacks. Simultaneous Turns in Multiplayer: It’s hard to go back to non-simultaneous turns after Warhammer 3, but it’s not a dealbreaker. Final Thoughts: Pharaoh is quite different from Warhammer or other historical titles. If you come from Warhammer, be prepared for a steep learning curve, but trust me, it’s worth it. The more you play, the better it gets.
