Aleppo: The Home of the Storm God
Aleppo (Halab), one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities, emerges in Bronze Age sources not primarily through its own remains but through the archives of Ebla, Mari, and Hattusa. These texts reveal a city whose significance derived from its role as the principal cult center of the storm god Hadad and as the political core of the Yamhad kingdom. We trace Aleppo’s development from a third-millennium cultic center to a major Amorite power, its involvement in the geopolitical struggles with Mari, Assyria, and Babylon, and its eventual destruction by the Hittites. We further examine Aleppo under Mitanni and Hittite administration, the Idrimi narrative, and the debated Iron Age kingdom of Palastin. Special attention is given to the Temple of Hadad and its possible role in shaping the Near Eastern combat myth tradition, with implications for Mesopotamian literature and the Hebrew Bible.
