Richard Hambleton "Shadows and Blood" at DORIAN GREY

Richard Hambleton stands out as one of the most recognizable of what became known as the "first wave" of East Village artists. In the early 1980s he gained attention for a performative style of gorilla street painting, with his signature image of the "shadow man" becoming ubiquitous over the walls of Downtown Manhattan. After his initial flash of fame, like much of the East Village itself, Hambleton sank back into oblivion, with rumors of substance abuse, health problems and traffic accidents swirling around the East Village scene. This exhibition features works mostly from the 1990s that display a more mature and accomplished ability of picture making, featuring metallic leaf, resin pours, stained and bleeding applications of paint. A musical introduction by City of the Sun was recorded live in Washington Square Park.
