Grow Endless Firewood On Less Land Than You Think
🪵 Try the free Firewood Calculator — it runs in your browser, nothing to install or download: https://firewood.theviewfromtheclouds... Can you really grow enough firewood to heat your home — and do you actually need 7 acres to do it? In this video, I look at the famous “7 acre” firewood claim and test it against what we’re seeing on our own land here in northern England. The answer is more interesting than simply choosing the “best” firewood. If you’re growing your own firewood, the real question is: what tree will thrive on your land and give you the most usable heat in a sensible amount of time? I compare oak, hybrid aspen, hybrid willow and poplar on our land, then show how I built a firewood calculator app using Forest Research Ecological Site Classification data and published tree-growing trial data. The app helps you work out: What trees are best suited to your land How much usable firewood you could grow How many dumpy bags or cubic metres that might produce How many winters of heat that could provide Whether coppice, traditional firewood growing, or long-term woodland makes most sense for your site The app is currently Great Britain only, but I’d love to expand it in the future. If you’d like to see it cover your part of the world, let me know in the comments. Try the free version here: https://firewood.theviewfromtheclouds... The free version gives you headline results for your land. The Pro version gives a full ranked list of tree species, planting distances, harvesting guidance, and explains which species are unlikely to work on your site and why. Pro access is available through Patreon or as a one-off lifetime purchase. Patreon: patreon.com/TheViewFromtheClouds One-off Pro access: https://firewood.theviewfromtheclouds... A quick note: this tool is a guide, not a professional survey. If you’re planning to spend serious money planting trees, get local professional advice first. And be sure to plante several species — a mix of suitable trees is better for biodiversity, resilience, and long-term firewood security. Thanks for watching — and let me know in the comments how much land you have and what the app recommends for your site. This is another adventure we have had on our smallholding with Hazel, the pup!
