Patents 101: How to Read a Patent

Maryland is home to 78 Federal labs; twice as many as any other state. What does that mean for business? It means prolific research and innovation is going on all the time and much of that innovation is available for businesses to use to solve technical challenges, enhance existing products, or develop new products. Intellectual property – whether your own or licensed from a federal lab or university – can be an important business differentiator. To understand potential ROI requires first understanding how to interpret a patent, then developing a solid commercialization plan. We are going to step through each part of a patent to learn about the inventors, the organizaiton that "owns" the patent, the "expiration date," and more.
