NOBODY Wants To Visit Amsterdam Anymore (Real Reason The Dutch Are Telling Tourists To Stay Away)
In the spring of 2023, Amsterdam — the most famously open city in Western Europe — started paying for online advertisements that told its own visitors to stay away. The actual caption read: "So, coming to Amsterdam for a messy night? Stay away." It was the moment a European capital looked directly into a camera and told the world, in plain English, that it had had enough. This is the story of how a city that spent four hundred years building its reputation on letting everyone in finally decided to find out what the opposite of openness actually feels like. The Stay Away campaign. The cannabis ban with the one-hundred-euro fine. The cruise terminal heading toward zero ships by 2035. The hotel construction moratorium. The accommodation VAT that jumped from nine percent to twenty-one percent on January first, 2026, more than doubling the cost of every hotel stay overnight. The numbers Amsterdam doesn't put on its tourism posters: 22.9 million overnight tourists in 2024 against just 920,000 residents. A 25-to-1 tourist-to-resident ratio. The highest rental prices in Europe. A 20-year wait for social housing. An average house at €500,000 against an average salary of €50,000. The math has long since stopped working for anyone who actually lives there. What we document on Fallen Cities is not the moment a place collapses. It is the moment a place stops being able to recognize itself. Venice arrived first and most completely. Barcelona is in the urban version of it now. Mallorca, an island compressed into ten weeks of summer, is accelerating through it. Amsterdam is the trading-city version — and because Amsterdam built its mythology on welcome itself rather than on architecture or weather, the contradiction lands harder here than almost anywhere else. The German art teacher who has come every April since 1984 and is starting to wonder why. The retired Jordaan archivist who stopped being angry around 2018. The British men who saw the mugshot ad and decided Lisbon will do instead. The investment fund in Luxembourg that bought the small hotel on the Singel. The algorithm in California that decides which apartments get listed as short-term rentals next week. The cruise-line executive in Miami who rerouted three ships to Rotterdam, where bus shuttles will bring the same passengers into the same city without ever entering the city's books. This is what tourism collapse looks like before the numbers turn. The Stay Away ads are the warning. The cannabis fines are the warning. The cruise ban is the warning. By the time the visitor numbers drop, the Amsterdam the visitors came for will already be gone. A city doesn't fall. It is slowly replaced. Amsterdam is being replaced right now. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE — the next chapter of Fallen Cities is already in production. The place we are documenting next was, until recently, considered immune to exactly the kind of decline you just watched unfold in Amsterdam. 💬 Tell us in the comments: have you been to Amsterdam in the last five years? Did you feel it — even before you could find the words for it? #FallenCities #Amsterdam #StayAway #AmsterdamOvertourism #OvertourismEurope #AmsterdamTourism #RedLightDistrict #DutchTourism #AmsterdamDecline #NobodyWantsToVisitAmsterdam
