The Origin of Wine Was Never What We Thought — DNA Finally Revealed The Truth

Ancient DNA extracted from 2,503 domesticated grapevines and 1,022 wild samples gathered across seventeen countries produced one of the most overturning findings in the history of agriculture — not because of when wine began, but because the single-cradle story that held for decades turned out to be wrong in almost every direction. The grape was not domesticated once. It was domesticated at least twice, in two separate valleys, at nearly the same moment — one lineage bred for eating, one for fermentation — roughly eleven thousand years ago, two thousand years before the oldest known wine vessels. The reason two distinct wild grapes were available to domesticate at all has nothing to do with farming: an ice age split the wild Eurasian vine into eastern and western refuges around two hundred thousand years ago, and those two populations lived apart for over a hundred and fifty thousand years. When Neolithic farmers carried their domesticated eastern vines westward, they crossbred them with the wild western grape they encountered along the way, producing the regional wine grapes of Europe. Every bottle of European wine carries genetic material from both sides of that ancient split, reunited not by climate but by human hands. The wild vine that made all of it possible is now critically endangered across much of its original range.
