Foundations of Faith - Part 3 - Sin

Why does the world feel so broken? Why do we keep falling into the same patterns no matter how hard we try to do better? The answer goes deeper than most people realize, and it starts with a word we often avoid: sin. Romans 5:12 tells us that sin entered the world through one man and spread to all of humanity. First John 1:8 makes clear that no one is exempt. But sin is more than just rule-breaking. The biblical words for sin in both Greek (hamartia) and Hebrew (chata) mean to miss the mark. We were created in the image of God, designed to reflect His glory, and we have fallen short of that design. Jesus Christ is described in Colossians 1:15 as the image of the invisible God. He is the last Adam, the perfect picture of what humanity was always meant to be. The goal of the Christian life is not simply to follow more rules. It is to become more like Christ. So how do we actually fight sin? Romans 8:6 and 8:13 make it clear that the battle is spiritual, not just behavioral. You are either putting sin to death by the Spirit or it is putting you to death. There is no neutral ground. Willpower alone is not enough. Trying harder treats the symptom while the disease goes untreated. The real answer is relationship with Jesus Christ. Drawing near to Him through prayer, Scripture, Christian community, and a renewed thought life (Philippians 4:8) is how sin loses its grip. Every sin promises joy, freedom, and fulfillment, but Romans 7 shows us that sin delivers slavery instead. When your identity and peace are rooted in Christ, those empty promises begin to lose their power. Topics covered include the biblical definition of sin, why all people are sinners, the meaning of hamartia and khata, Jesus as the last Adam, how to fight sin through the Holy Spirit, the role of prayer and Scripture in spiritual growth, and practical steps for overcoming temptation. Whether you are new to faith or have been walking with Christ for years, this is a message about getting to the root of the problem and finding real, lasting freedom through a relationship with Jesus.
