The one-kilometer section of Shaanxi North Road from Julu Road to Xinzha Road is one of only three "Famous Chinese Historical and Cultural Streets" in Shanghai rated by the Ministry of Culture. Formerly known as Seymour Road, it was built in 1914 and is a century-old street. It is also one of Shanghai's "64 roads that will never be widened." The road is so narrow that two people have to pass each other sideways when they meet on the sidewalk. Walking under the dense shade of the plane trees is like walking into the gate of a castle. Most of the streets, alleys, lanes, mansions, apartments and villas on both sides are hundreds of years old. Along the way, there are more than 20 former residences of celebrities, outstanding historical buildings, and cultural relics protection buildings.
