Why Do Human Rickshaws Still Exist In Kolkata?

India's Kolkata is the last remaining bastion of human-powered 'tana', a rickshaw that's pulled by hand. It was introduced to the city by the British to exercise their authority as the colonials rode the wooden carts while Indians pulled it. The state government has tried to ban this mode of transport, but rather unsuccessfully as they continue to remain in operation.
