We Visit Peaks Island in Portland Maine! Military Battery, Golf Carts, Rocky Shores & A Ferry Ride!

We were recently in Portland Maine for 4 days and took a few days to visit some often overlooked spots. One of those was Peaks Island, a small island off the coast of Portland which involves a 20 minute ferry from the Casco Bay Terminal on Commercial Street. Unfortunately we were not able to bring the camper on this trip so we did stay at a hotel on the waterfront so we were able to walk to the ferry as parking can be challenging in the Old Port of Portland! We visited the island for the first time last summer and it was so much busier than this trip! We weren't able to secure golf cart reservations last year and missed out on so much that the island has to offer. Being able to zip along in the cart along Seashore Ave and watch the waves crash on the rocks was amazing! But we were very excited to visit Battery Steele. It is hidden amongst the trees so unless you know about this place, it will likely be missed! But the beautiful ride through the birch tree lined woods in the golf cart brought us right to it! We wished we had brought a flashlight so we could tour the entire structure along with the rooms that extend out. Now a golf cart is only one of the ways to get around the island. Being a 4 mile loop, it is walkable and bike rentals are also nearby as you exit off the ferry. And you can bring your vehicle over although, we are still partial to the golf cart which we rented from Peak Island Golf Carts. They do require you to reserve the day before - no same day rentals. And while you are there, check out a meal at one of the restaurants. We ate at the Island Lobster Co last year and our picnic table overlooked the bay. This time, we stopped in for breakfast at Peaks Island Cafe for one of their famous cinammon rolls! It was steps from the ferry and hot coffee and cinammon rolls on a cool Maine day was perfect!
