The first case of HIV infection in Uzbekistan was identified in 1987. Today, more than 48,000 people live here with the diagnosis. And although medical progress has reclassified this disease from "fatal" to "chronic" worldwide, many Uzbek families still hide or abandon their children and loved ones upon learning of their HIV-positive status. Yevgenia Korotkova is a happy wife and mother, a former healthcare worker, an HIV activist, and the coordinator of the organization "Ishonch va Hoyet" with an "open face."
