The Philistines, who came from the Aegean Sea, settled on the southern coast of Canaan in the 11th century BC. They clashed with the Israelites and even captured the Ark of the Covenant, taking it to the temple of Dagon. When the statue of that god fell and subsequent plagues struck them, they were forced to return the Ark. Archaeology shows that they were culturally advanced, despite the Bible’s negative portrayal.
