Forgiveness in Mental and Physical Health, Loren Toussaint
Forgiveness in Mental and Physical Health | Prof. Loren Toussaint | ECRSH 2026 How does forgiveness affect both mental and physical health? In this keynote lecture, Prof. Loren Toussaint presents evidence that forgiveness is not only a spiritual or moral practice but also a significant factor in psychological well-being, physical health, and especially cardiovascular health. Key points include: • Forgiveness involves letting go of resentment, anger, and hostility while developing more positive attitudes toward the offender. • Forgiveness is different from reconciliation and does not require restoring a relationship. It is also distinct from justice. • Self-forgiveness may be as important—or even more important—than forgiving others for mental well-being. • People who develop a generally forgiving disposition (“trait forgiveness”) tend to experience greater long-term benefits than those who only forgive specific offenses. • Neuroscientific research suggests that forgiveness involves brain regions associated with empathy, perspective-taking, emotional regulation, and cognitive control. • Unforgiveness is linked to stress, increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and poorer cardiovascular functioning. • Forgiveness interventions have been associated with improved spirituality, reduced anxiety and depression, greater life satisfaction, and healthier heart-rate variability. • Strong social relationships and forgiveness may help counter loneliness, social fragmentation, and chronic stress. Prof. Toussaint concludes that forgiveness is neither weakness nor passivity. Rather, it is a voluntary process that can strengthen spiritual well-being, improve emotional health, and contribute to healthier physiological functioning by reducing the burden of chronic stress. 📍 ECRSH 2026, Basel, Switzerland 🎓 Speaker: Prof. Loren Toussaint 🏥 Conference Theme: Heart, Brain, and Spirit – A Holistic Approach to Modern Healthcare Learn more about ECRSH: 👉 https://www.ecrsh.eu #ECRSH2026 #LorenToussaint #Forgiveness #MentalHealth #PhysicalHealth #SpiritualityAndHealth #HeartBrainSpirit #ForgivenessResearch #SelfForgiveness #CardiovascularHealth #Psychology #SpiritualCare #HealthAndWellbeing #ReligionAndHealth #PositivePsychology
