What could be more challenging than creating a video for Grendel by Marillion? I started with some research: I read the poem Beowulf, translated parts of it, and tried to figure out how the song was structured. I had a rough idea of how the video should begin, but the version I chose is 17 minutes and 15 seconds long. Finding suitable visual material proved difficult. That’s when I turned to AI for help—but that was disappointing. Almost none of the generators delivered what I had in mind. Eventually, I settled on Microsoft Designer. Over time, I managed to teach it the right style, but even then, I could often only use one out of every ten generated images—and many of those still needed manual editing. ChatGTP helped me modify existing images. For example, I drew Grendel myself. But I needed him in multiple poses, ChatCTP solved this for me. From the images, I then created 3D models. For this video, I made 113 full-screen models. It’s always a challenge to preserve the mood of an image in a 3D model, which is why I rendered everything. Rendering is the process where a computer generates an image or animation based on a 3D model or other raw data. This was incredibly time-consuming. Each second of video requires 30 frames. I now have 34,099 frames for this video, taking up 20 GB of storage. I hope the end result is worth it—I’ve spent six months working on it. Jan Hendrik
