Itinerario a Varese Ligure, il primo borgo biologico in Italia

Varese Ligure, in Liguria's upper Vara Valley, is a village with a distinctive shape that, seen from above, resembles the euro symbol. But Varese Ligure's wealth, or rather its prosperity, was earned over time and through ingenuity: imagine this inland village, difficult to reach and facing competition from the Cinque Terre by the sea. Depopulation and abandonment were a harsh reality until ingenuity reversed the decline of what had historically been an important outpost of the Fieschi family. Thanks to this ingenuity, Varese Ligure became the first eco-friendly rural village in Italy to be certified ISO 14001 for proper environmental management, and was also awarded the European Union's Best Rural Community Award. We mentioned that, seen from above, it reminds some of the euro symbol. Perhaps not by chance, although its form obviously predates the birth of the euro... in fact, it has a very modern economic strategy focused on environmentally friendly agriculture, trade, tourism, and renewable energy. Not only that, Varese Ligure is clean and well-kept, so much so that it is listed among the most beautiful Ligurian villages in Italy. Varese Ligure is located in the Upper Vara Valley, known as the "Organic Valley." This area is home to dozens of farms that, through local cooperatives, produce organic meats and cheeses. The municipal area is the largest in the province of La Spezia, representing over 15% of the total territory, and is the second largest in Liguria, after Genoa. The Grecino Bridge is located in the neighborhood of the same name, which has retained its medieval appearance. On the opposite side is the Acacie Park, with vegetable gardens, crops, and a few farmyard animals. The area is equipped with benches and is close to the Vara River. A place for everyone to find tranquility. The Borgo Rotondo, built by the Fieschi family to better protect the territory, was also suitable for trade, with shops under the porticoes and a market in the large Piazza Fieschi. The colors are the bright ones typical of Ligurian village houses. The castle dominates the main square of Varese Ligure and was the center of the Fieschi family's power for centuries. Crosetti, corsetti, or croxetti are a type of traditional Ligurian pasta, made using a mold that gives it a unique beauty and flavor. Today, very few artisans still handcraft the molds for this pasta. Near the bridge, we found Pietro Picetti's workshop, which makes wooden molds sold worldwide.
