Wk 5 – Garangedon | 12/8 Djembe Classic in the Soli Path Feel

Garangedon is a traditional rhythm associated with the shoemakers’ caste in Mali. This version comes through Mamady Keïta, who brought it into the wider djembe repertoire from Guinea. What makes Garangedon so compelling is how it perfectly captures the Soli Rapide style feeling — that distinctive tension where the groove leans just before the pulse, creating a suspended, rolling swing that defines so many of these grooves. In this lesson, we break down the key accompaniment phrase and explore how that subtle shift gives the rhythm its characteristic energy and flow. Next week, we’ll take a related pattern and begin connecting the dots between djembe and accompanying drums, revealing how these interlocking parts create the full texture. ------------------------ 0:00 – Intro 0:55 – Demo 1:44 – Breakdown 1 6:14 – The overall feeling 8:50 – Vocalising 10:47 – Breakdown 2 14:31 – Breakdown 3 19:01 – Grace notes 25:09 – Combining everything 28:44 – Wrap-up ------------------------- About my channel I’m Steve, founder of Unbeatable Energy and an African drumming enthusiast for over 30 years! 🪘 If you enjoyed this video please like & subscribe – it really helps our channel grow.
