UNFORGETTABLE WINTERS IN ISTANBUL: WINTER OF 1929 With the storm that began on January 6th, ships in the harbor sounded their sirens at 2 a.m., warning the people of Istanbul of very cold days to come. Heavy snowfall began on January 7th, lasting intermittently for nearly two months. WINTER OF 1936 The winter of 1936 is known for its short but intense cold and snowfall. The Unkapanı Bridge split in four this year, causing numerous fishing boats and motorboats to sink. WINTER 1942 In 1942, the temperature in Göztepe did not rise above 0 degrees Celsius for 10 days, 1 degree Celsius for 14 days, 3 degrees Celsius for 27 days, and 5 degrees Celsius for 44 days. WINTER 1954 This year, similar scenes to those in 1929 occurred. The Bosphorus was covered with ice from the Danube. WINTER 1963 In the winter of 1963, Lake Terkos froze, leaving water unavailable for days. Istanbul's road connection to Thrace was cut off. Food and fuel were scarce. Three journalists froze to death. WINTER 1969 In 1969, Istanbul's population was around 2.1 million. Another severe winter was experienced. WINTER 1987 In March 1987, Istanbul experienced a snowstorm that lasted for days. The average temperature was -4 degrees Celsius for ten days. Heavy snow, blizzards, and storms gripped the city. WINTER 1992 The winter of 1992 also became one of Istanbul's most unforgettable winters. WINTER 2004 Snowfall in 2004 virtually paralyzed life in Istanbul. Power went out, water froze, water went dry, and natural gas was cut off in many areas. People were stranded on the roads and in their cars. WINTER 2012 2012 saw the coldest day in 33 years. The Çatalca radar station recorded a low of 10.4 degrees Celsius. WINTER 2017 The snowfall pattern of 2017 was dubbed Godzilla Winter. Snow depth reached 120 centimeters. Trucks were banned from traffic. Land, air, and sea transportation were significantly affected by the precipitation. WINTER 2021 Snow fell again in January, but not as heavily. Istanbul experienced very different scenes this winter. Snowfall, which began on February 14th, affected the higher elevations of Istanbul. Snow depths ranged from 25 to 40 cm.
