Please support me here: https://patronite.pl/doktor Rabies is undoubtedly the most terrifying virus known to humanity, instilling paralyzing fear for centuries. Despite effective prevention methods, the disease continues to reap a bloody toll, killing an average of three people during the average video. This cunning pathogen attacks the nervous system, leading to acute encephalitis and agonizing agony, which almost always ends in death by asphyxiation. In this film, we explore the fascinating yet dark strategies employed by this virus and learn the incredible story of Jeanna Giese. This fifteen-year-old Wisconsin student became a medical phenomenon after becoming the first person in the world to survive full-blown rabies thanks to an experimental method known as the Milwaukee Protocol. Her case raised great hopes, but also sparked considerable controversy due to the cost of treatment, which reached millions of dollars and the low success rate of this method in subsequent trials. Understanding rabies requires a look at its unique way of spreading within the body. The virus doesn't enter the bloodstream but hides in muscle tissue, from where it slowly, at a speed of just a few millimeters per day, crawls along nerve fibers straight to the brain. It is this slow process that offers a chance for salvation in the form of post-exposure vaccination, which must be administered before the pathogen crosses the blood-brain barrier. Once the virus reaches its target, it begins to replicate in neurons, forming characteristic Negri bodies, and then makes its way back to the salivary glands to infect further. The symptoms it causes are truly demonic: hydrophobia makes the sufferer unable to swallow even a sip of water, reacting with painful laryngeal spasms, while the accompanying aggression and fear are intended to facilitate the virus's transmission to the next victim via bite. In the animal kingdom, rabies takes many forms, from a frenzied form to a silent, paralytic form. While dogs account for the vast majority of human infections worldwide, a fascinating exception are opossums, whose low body temperature and specific receptor structure make them virtually immune to the classic virus. We will also examine the situation in Poland, where, thanks to mass fox vaccination campaigns, the number of cases has dropped dramatically, and bats, though notorious, pose a marginal threat. You will also learn why ordinary soap and water can be more effective as first aid than hydrogen peroxide, and what unusual routes of infection, from inhalation of vapors in caves to organ transplants, have been identified by medical science. This is a documentary about the line between life and death, the power of modern prevention, and why, despite scientific advances, rabies should never be underestimated.
