Non-metals are generally brittle, dull, poor conductors, forming electronegative ions. Key concepts include ionic bonding, reactivity series, and metallurgy. Key Differences Physical Properties: Metals are hard, high-melting-point solids (mercury is an exception), while non-metals can be solids, liquids, or gases. Chemical Properties: Metals form basic or amphoteric oxides and act as reducing agents. Non-metals form acidic or neutral oxides and are oxidizing agents. Reactivity: Metals react with dilute acids to produce hydrogen gas, whereas non-metals typically do not. Ionic Compounds Metals and non-metals react by transferring electrons to form ionic compounds (e.g., ). Ionic compounds are solid, hard, brittle, have high melting/boiling points, and are soluble in water. They conduct electricity in molten or aqueous solutions, but not in solid form. Metallurgy and Extraction Metals are extracted from ores (earth's crust) through mining. Extraction steps include Concentration of Ore, Reduction (roasting for sulphides, calcination for carbonates), and Refining. Corrosion Prevention: Metals are protected by painting, galvanizing, or alloying. Alloys An alloy is a homogeneous mixture of a metal with other metals or non-metals to improve properties like strength and corrosion resistance. Examples: Stainless Steel 🔥 1. What are Metals? 👉 Metals are elements that lose electrons during chemical reactions. ✔ Properties of Metals: Lustrous (shiny surface) Good conductors of heat and electricity Malleable (can be beaten into sheets) Ductile (can be drawn into wires) Form positive ions (cations) 👉 Examples: Sodium (Na), Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu) ❌ 2. What are Non-Metals? 👉 Non-metals are elements that gain electrons during chemical reactions. ✔ Properties of Non-Metals: Dull appearance Poor conductors of heat and electricity Brittle (break easily) Exist in solid, liquid, or gas form Form negative ions (anions) 👉 Examples: Oxygen (O), Chlorine (Cl), Sulphur (S) ⚡ 3. What is an Ion? (Very Important) 👉 An ion is formed when an atom loses or gains electrons. Types of Ions: Cation (+) → formed by loss of electrons Example: Na → Na⁺ Anion (–) → formed by gain of electrons Example: Cl → Cl⁻ 👉 Metals form cations 👉 Non-metals form anions 🔥 4. What is an Ionic Compound? 👉 An ionic compound is formed when a metal reacts with a non-metal 👉 It involves transfer of electrons Example: Na + Cl → NaCl 👉 Sodium loses electron 👉 Chlorine gains electron 💡 Properties of Ionic Compounds (Important) High melting and boiling points Usually solid and hard Brittle in nature Conduct electricity in molten or aqueous state ⚗️ 5. Chemical Reactions of Metals (1) With Oxygen: Metal + O₂ → Metal oxide 👉 Nature: Basic (2) With Water: Metal + H₂O → Metal hydroxide + Hydrogen gas (3) With Acids: Metal + Acid → Salt + Hydrogen gas ⚗️ 6. Chemical Reactions of Non-Metals (1) With Oxygen: Non-metal + O₂ → Non-metal oxide 👉 Nature: Acidic Example: CO₂ → Acidic oxide ⚖️ 7. Reactivity Series (Very Important) 👉 It shows the relative reactivity of metals 👉 A more reactive metal can displace a less reactive metal from its compound Example: Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu 👉 Zinc is more reactive than Copper 🔥 8. Key Concepts (Exam Focus) Metals: Lose electrons Act as reducing agents Non-Metals: Gain electrons Act as oxidising agents 🧠 Quick Revision (1-Minute Summary) Metals → form positive ions (cations) Non-metals → form negative ions (anions) Ionic bond → formed by electron transfer Ionic compounds → high melting point,
