Break-ups hurts like hell and men feel it. Bob experienced a lifetime of emotions in this song. It's intimate, painful, and lonely. Not in the slightest did he project any form of resentment. Even though he was hurting, he was still open to letting her in for the moment. I definitely sense denial, because they are at the end with this relationship, which seems to be a case of him acknowledging that they've let this loneliness creep into their relationship.
