Asphalt Shingle Recycling - How to do it and why?

The other week I made a new friend, John, who said he had 35 acres out in the county where I could fly my drone. His only requirement was for me to promise not to buzz the cattle that roamed freely around the property. He was one of the partners for a company that recycles asphalt roofing shingles, keeping them out of the landfill and conserving resources at the same time. I had lots of fun flying around his property and watching the herd of cows. One cow came within 20 feet of where I was seated, watching me fly my drone. Moo! Anyway, I decided to learn more about the recycling process and made this video about how asphalt roofing shingles get recycled into a product that can be used for making new asphalt paving material and dust control for unpaved roads. This process saves multiple tons of old roofing material from being discarded in public landfills each year and provides a cost savings to reputable "green" roofing companies who might otherwise use landfills, rather than illegal dumping on the side of the road. The City of San Antonio reported that illegal dumping of construction and demolition debris (shingle, drywall, lumber,bricks, concrete and siding) is one of the most costly problems facing San Antonio. Please recycle all shingle waste, it is the right thing to do. The folks who own this company have more than 25 years of experience in this industry and told me they only charge about half of what the landfills would charge the roofers to dispose of their old shingles. Until I saw how they processed and recycled shingles, I hadn't really thought about the environmental consequences that disposing of the old roofing shingles would cause. I know that the next time my house needs a new roof, I'll be asking the roofer where they plan to take my old shingles for disposal. Sometimes cheaper isn't always better.
