In an interview recorded at their Madrid home, he explains that he began Un año y tres meses while the writer was already ill, and that he did so "to find meaning in her life." At the same time, Luis García Montero recounts how the posthumous novel, Everything's Going to Get Better, came about: "She was working on the last of the Episodes of an Endless War when the pandemic broke out. This made her worry about the dangers that await us in the future, and that's how a dystopian novel came about." A notable characteristic of Almudena Grandes was that she always published with only one publisher, Tusquets.
