MILANO - Basilica di Santo Stefano Maggiore

The church is today located in the square of the same name, Santo Stefano, in the historic center of Milan. The primitive cult building, founded around 417 on the initiative of the future bishop Martiniano Osio, was dedicated to San Zaccaria and was built in the place where the so-called "Stone of the Innocents" was preserved where tradition had it that the relics of four Christian martyrs dating back to the IV century and martyred under Valentinian I. The sacred stone is still preserved today in a small chamber under the flooring commemorated by a plaque visible inside the main nave. The fifth century church, however, ended up destroyed by a fire that broke out inside it in 1070 and then it was rebuilt in Romanesque style in 1075 and dedicated this time to Santo Stefano protomartyr. On 26 December 1476 the atrium of the church was the scene of the assassination of Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza at the hands of some Milanese aristocratic conspirators. The lord of Milan had in fact arrived at the basilica for the celebrations of the patron saint and, as can be read on the commemorative plaque incorporated into the flooring, the historic event occurred immediately after the entrance portal to the basilica. On 30 September 1571 the painter Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, was baptized there. Starting from 27 July 1594, the church underwent a series of new interventions on the initiative of the archbishop cardinal Federico Borromeo, which continued over the following centuries. The stained glass windows in the apse depicting the Evangelists and four stained glass windows in the chapels of the side naves (Assumption, Vesting of Saint Stephen, Annunciation, Final Judgment) were created between 1960 and 1965 by the stained glass painter Amalia Panigati.
