John Milton, Paradise Lost, Book 1
Milton's Paradise Lost is the greatest poem in the English language. It is undoubtedly an epic, and the last great epic written. Yet the poetic and critical tradition has often not only misunderstood it, but misrepresented it. This lecture will look at the first book of Paradise Lost, and the way in which Milton begins his epic, and the plain logical and theological thread which causes his 'council of the gods' of pagan conventions to take place in diverse locations. If anything, the machinery of the Classical epic is far more strongly adhered to by Milton (by placing it in the first three books of Paradise Lost), and yet he is not only transforming the world's sense of space and time as the measure of our understanding; he is utterly transforming what constitutes epic heroism. ❤️ If you find my channel helpful, become a channel member: / drscottmasson To support my channel and assist me in providing better content, please go here: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?token=...
